Or how to behave in a casino

By learning the correct casino etiquette, you will make the gaming experience better for you, the casino personnel and the people around you.

    BLACKJACK

As this is one of the more popular games, you will probably find yourself at some time or another at a blackjack table.
If there is an open box at the table, you are welcome to join the game but before opening another box it is customary to inquire how the table is going and if the other players mind. If the table is currently on a hot streak you will asked not to open, but rather to play behind one of the existing boxes. You can obviously ignore everyone, but this will not endear you to the other players.
Up to 3 players are allowed on one box, if you decide to play behind a player, you don't have to ask their permission, and can do so at any time, as long as the hand hasn't been dealt yet.
Please note that if you play on another box, you have no say on the call of the cards, regardless if you are playing more than the person leading the box.

When you start playing, place your money in front of you on the table. Do NOT hand it to the dealer direct, as they are not allowed to except a hand to hand transfer of cash.

Keep your chips in front of you, and keep a watchfull eye on them, as there are chip stealers in the casino, and they will monitor your awareness.
Place your bet. While the hand hasn't been dealt you can quicly press more chips or take your bet away, but as soon as the dealer touches the first card to be dealt you CANNOT touch your chips.

DO NOT at any time touch the cards. You are not allowed at any time to touch the cards on a standard multideck face up game of blackjack. (Very rare, but at some casinos they have the single deck of card variation of blackjack, where the cards are dealt face down, so that the other players can't see your cards. In this game you need to pick up your cards).

Learn the correct hand signals for standing, hitting and splitting. Some casinos are strict on this, as these are monitored by the casinos security cameras and used as evidence as to your actions in times of dispute.

Do not abuse the dealer. He is doing his job and is not responsible for the flow of the cards. If you are on a losing streak, and feel the dealer is against you, then get up and change tables, but don't acuse the dealer of cheating, as this would be against the casinos best interests.

If you are not playing, you could be asked by the dealer or pit boss to leave the table, as chairs are reserved for playing customers.

    ROULETTE

When approaching a roulette table, if you intend to play colour chips, wait until the dealer has finished paying the last bet, but before the start of the next spin, before placing your money on the table. Don't try and buy colour chips during the spin or while the dealer is in the middle of a payout. You can during a spin play a call or outside bet, unless obviously the dealer has called no more bets.

Once you have received your coloured chips, you can play them only at the table you bought into. Don't take your chips to another roulette table. You must cash them first if you want to leave the table.

Place your chips carefully, as the action can get hectic at times, and you don't want to knock other peoples chips off their number. If you can't reach a certain area on the table, place your chips as close as possible to the dealer and inform them of the numbers you want to play.

Once the dealer has called no more bets, you are not allowed to place or remove any of your chips.

While the dealer is paying out the last winning bet, you may not place your next bets around the winning number. This is normally the 2 rows before and after the winning number.

If you want to cash in your chips, do so after the dealer has finished paying out the last bet, but before the next spin.

    SLOTS

When playing slots, don't put your feet up on the chair next to you or on the slot machine. If you are tired, go home to sleep.

If the casino is busy, play only one slot machine at a time. This is also better for your own game play and concentration, especially with new video slot games and video poker where concentration is important.

If you are playing a slot machine and need to go to the toilet or get a drink, you may reserve the slot by keeping your loyalty card in the slot and placing a coin box over the buttons. do not though do this if you are going for supper or want to take a long break.

Don't hit or be abusive to the slot machine.

    GENERAL

It is customary after a winning streak or a good win on the roulette for istance to tip the dealer. You can tip in one of two ways: A. You can give the dealer a certain amount with your chips, or B. You can plave a bet and tell the dealer that the outcome is for them. For eample if you are playing R25.00 blackjack, double your bet and inform the dealer that on this round, if you win the hand, half of the winnings are for them.

Do not tell the other players at your table how to play. You cannot know in advance the outcome of a hand or a spin of the wheel. There are certain ways to play certain games that increases your odds (view our how to play sections), but if someone, in your opinion is not playing correctly, then leave the table.

Do not share your bad luck stories and how much money you've lost - no-one really cares.

Do NOT abuse the casino staff

    DO HAVE FUN
